Any Suggestions?

Hello again,
I was reading through some of the books that are available at my local library (Thanks Barbara!) and came across something very interesting. I know networking is important to finding investors but is there a place or forum that I could solicit for investors. Any Grant Money Available???

Hello,
I am trying to bring my idea from in my head into a reality. Unfortunately the reality is you need money to make it. I am trying to get as much free money as I can. I am sure everyone who wants to start their own business does. I don't know where to start. I am trying to open a novelty shop. I don't understand how to apply for grants or where to find them without having to pay to get the information. I was told that the information is free but every website I visit wants you to pay! Where… Continue

Welcome! Glad you joined the blog.

To answer your question about grants. This is certainly one of the most asked questions we get as business consultants, so you are not alone in asking, and it's best to look at all available resources to assist you when you are starting a new venture. That being said, there is very little grant money available for a for-profit business. The only for-profit grant money available is designated for high-tech companies in industries such as bio-science or medical devices. And even that money is very tough to get. Now, if you are starting a non-profit entity, that's a different story and there is grant monies available for those. An example of a non-profit would be a center focused on a cause such as autism, elder care, etc. Raising grant money for non-profit's is no picnic either.

So my advice to you would be focus on your idea and who has the need for what it is you offer. Develop a basic business plan focused on your industry and target market. Set some short term and long term goals/milestones that you can measure. If your start-up is capital intensive, you would need to look at business loans or private investors (such as family and friends). I usually advise my clients to start small, build the business from profits, keep a sharp eye on cash flow, and always being selling and promoting what you offer.

Feel free to contact your nearest SBDC consultant if you'd like. See the home page of this blog for more details on SBDC.

Best wishes for great success! - Kevin
