Thank you very much for your comment. I really feel this is the place to bounce ideas even if it isn't what I wanted to hear. I guess I should have expexted that answer or everyone would have their own business. I am currently working on my business plan and am in contact with SBDC. I will be asking tons of questions and I appreciate everyones honest answers!

Thanks Kevin, I am right on that path. I have targeted a storefront in a high traffic low rent on Sawmill Rd that will meet the small retail space need. My business plan is nearly half done. I have some data I need to get my hands on regarding some levels of market research without spending hundreds of dollars to companies like Clarita, any ideas? I have been to the Dublin Chamber of Commerce but they only have data applicable to the Census bureau which is nearly 10 years old.

Michael Bowers game me your name. I recently lost my job and am planning on opening my own Adv/Mrktg business in Delaware, OH. Can you provide more detailed info. re: needs/requirements for a vendor's license for Adv/Mrktg business in Ohio? Here is what Michael provided:
'Although they keep changing the rules to take in more sales tax; if you are providing marketing and advertising services, you should not need a vendor's license.'
Do I still need to file a Business Name with the state?
Secondly. I am 62. Is there any seed or grant money for somebody my age wanting to start a business in Ohio?
regards,
Larry

A Little About Me........

I have been a business management consultant for eight years, mostly focused on small businesses and start-ups. I have been on the SBDC team for almost seven years as a consultant. The SBDC (Small Business Development Center) really offers some great advice and guidance that is much needed when you own or are starting a business.

Prior to consulting I was in financial services at Chase Manhattan. I have an undergrad degree in Business Admin from Ohio Dominican and an MBA from Capital University.

I love entrepreneurship and its rewards, benefits, and challenges.

In the little non-work time I have I mostly enjoy spending time with family, running, the very occasional golf game, and working some more.

Cash Flow & Financing

Cash flow can make or break a small businesses. Businesses require money to operate and in tough times, like those we are currently facing, cash can get tight. Most businesses at some point, have to borrow money, whether it be for much needed new equipment or to cover a temporary cash flow gap.

Maybe you are in need of financing for a new line of products or an overall company expansion. Or you need financing for seasonal inventory or commercial real estate. If you are under financed, your focu… Continue

Marketing Plans for Small Companies

Offering a new product line without a marketing plan can spell disaster for a fledgling business. Small businesses are on constrained budgets, and therefore, do not have the financial resources of big businesses that can handle a failed product line. For each new line of products or services your small business offers, a marketing plan needs to be developed to determine how the product will get into the customers’ hands.

A marketing plan helps a business organize a written strategy to market th… Continue

Start a business in this economy? Are you crazy?

If you listen or read mainstream media, you may be wondering if deciding to start a business now is a bad idea. After all the stock market just finished the worse week in it’s history, large financial institutions are needing rescued, many companies are rapidly cutting their workforce, etc, etc. I personally have had a few clients just this week contact me saying that based on the current economic events, they have decided to put their starting of a business on hold. While I do understand this a… Continue

What Business Plan???

If that's your answer when asked 'where is your business plan,' you may have a problem.

How long has it been since you updated your business plan. If your answer is, “I don’t have a business plan,” then your business is really only coasting along aimlessly. We have all heard that failing to plan, by default, means you are planning to fail, rather than planning for success. Whether you are a new venture or existing business, you need a plan.

Without a roadmap for your company to follow, how do… Continue
